I’d say the broad thesis is that vocation is work that responds to a sense of calling in life: in some way, it lets you live out a duty or responsibility that life has presented you with.
We’re most likely to think of the extraordinary stories of vocation—people who drop everything to devote their lives to charitable causes or people who devote every waking hour to art—but I think it’s important to emphasize that work is responsive to calling not just for its own sake but for how it fits into the broader story of your life. Someone who works at a job that isn’t necessarily their passion or primary goal but manages to support a family through their work is still living out their vocation: this work is still responsive to their calling.
We’re actually working on a book right now that we’re hoping to have ready in the near future—a lot of it will be going more in depth defining work, vocation, etc.
